Packing for 3 Months in Thailand

Decisions, Decisions

I am going to be working from Thailand for 3 months, what the hell do I bring?  Not only that, but what do I NOT bring?  Number 1 thing that isn't worth brining is my massive gaming PC.  Too heavy, and too big for a temporary visit.  It would be a pain to get it there, and then get it back.

Too much to pack???
I have a gaming livestream that I do, I have editing for a client, and I write code.  I can't do all of that on my work laptop!  I also have to be stealthy for work, so they don't know where I am for now.  Eventually I will let them know, but not right now.  It took me quite some time to figure out what to bring, and how to bring it, without having 2 large, heavy, check-in bags for the flights.  So, how am I going to do this?

What I need

Clothes

I need clothes, but I don't need a lot.  It isn't too cold there, so I need only enough warm clothes to get me to the airport in the US.  The rest can be light clothes, and I have laundry facilities there.

Computers

I need a decent computer.  It has to play games, edit, and be able to write code.  I have a gaming laptop, so that is coming, but it isn't quite good enough to play games as well as stream.  It can edit, if needed.  coding isn't a problem, either.  So, I need a computer to stream, and that is where I have a little mini PC that has an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 and a Radeon Graphics card.  I have already tested it with editing as well as streaming.  I have that good to go.

Streaming

I need microphone(s), my small mixer, headphones.  I also have 3 stream decks to bring.  I had a couple of cases already, and had to buy a couple more for the stream decks.  I don't want my equipment to get damaged during transport, so I am doing the best I can to protect them. The microphones came with carrying pouches, so they should be fine.

Video / Photo gear

I have a nice camera as I also make videos for stock libraries to sell.  Not to mention a YouTube Channel.  I also have 2 DJI Pocket cameras, and an Action Camera.  Those are all very compact, and I have all of the cases for those.  Don't forget the batteries, those will have to be in my carry on.

Quest 2

Really?  Do I NEED it?  not really, but it is coming anyway.  My girlfriend and her kids want to play it, and I want to let them.  I have a good travel case for it.  If push comes to shove, it will be the first thing I pull out of the suitcases.

OMG, how many suitcases do I need?

Oddly enough, it isn't as bad as I thought.  I have 1 BIG check-in bag that shouldn't be overweight.  I have 1 hard-shell carryon, as well as a backpack.  The backpack will carry my laptop, cables, batteries, book for reading on the plane, headphones, and anything I need for the planes.

The hard-shell carryon will have cameras, the mini pc, and other gear that shouldn't be in the checked in bag.  I will also put a change of clothes in this one. I have along layover in Bangkok, and I would prefer to know I have a change of clothes.

The checked bag will have the quest, and various other things I need, as well as all of my clothes.  I have done some test packing, and this looks to be all I am going to need.  If I am too full, things will start to be removed.  I am not taking more than this!  It seems like a lot, but proper planning should keep it portable enough.

I had expected to have to bring 2 BIG checked-in bags, and was prepared to buy another one, if needed.  After I have tested this out, I think I am fine with only one.  That makes me happy, since I have 4 planes on the way there, and the last one only allows me 1 checked bag.  It will be a total of about 36 hours of travel time before I get to my girlfriend, then we have about an hour drive to where I will be staying for 3 months.

If you are interested in keeping up on this journey and see how my girlfriend and I are going to get small business going in rural Thailand, make sure you check back in regularly to see the progress.  As of this post, I am making preparations to fly.  Flights are booked, accommodations are in place.  I still have more to do, and will post more in the coming days!
