Why?

Why Take the Risk?

Most people are afraid to leave their jobs, no matter how great or bad it is.  It is the security of it all, a regular paycheck.  I totally understand it, and I have grown accustomed to it over the last several years.  However, I have been through a lot in my life.  I have had highs and lows, and many different jobs from manufacturing, retail, driving, to self-employed.  While being employed with a steady paycheck is wonderful, I prefer to live on my own terms.  That is hard to do with a standard 9-5.

My job has sucked the life out of me.  I was happier being on the verge of broke, and doing what I pleased whenever I wanted.  Of course, I was limited to my budget, but I was still very happy.  Getting this job helped me get to a better place.  I still kept my bills to a minimum, and paid off debt.  I don't have a ton in savings, but I have enough for me to be comfortable moving.

The company I work for is great, and I have had a ton of flexibility with working at home. I highly doubt they will just allow me to work from Thailand.  I have gone back and forth about asking permission, but I prefer to ask for forgiveness if they find out.  Talking to friends and family, I hatched a plan to move.  I have come to terms with the fact that I may not have my job after I move, but I know that I will be ok.  I have many skills that I can utilize on the internet to make enough money to live on in Thailand.

Most importantly, I feel that now is the best time for me to do this.  If I don't at least try, I will probably regret it for the rest of my life.

Why Thailand?

Why NOT Thailand?  Have you been there?  The people are the best.  Always greeting you with a smile, always helpful, and just in general, a great culture.  Sure, there are bad people, as there are everywhere you go.  But, the normal people make up for that in spades.  My friend and I equate it to the USA in the 1950s.

Scuba Day
The customer service is better than the US, the women treat their men nicer than the US.  Is it just because I am a foreigner?  I am sure that doesn't hurt.  But, I have gotten to know many people from Thailand, and I have had too many great experiences even from those I have known for years.

The lifestyle is far more laid back in Thailand. Everyone is on Thai time.  Just a laid back, and easygoing attitude on everything.

There are issues with some of the things in Thailand, but they are far outweighed by all of the good things.

After all of that, the cost of living is so damn affordable for a westerner, that it is a no brainer for me.

Not as Much a Risk

When you look at it from my point, it is not as much of a risk as it seems.  Sure, there are some risks.  Sure it will be challenging to move to a completely different country on the other side of the world.  There will be day-to-day things that I won't have easy access to that I have now.  In my mind, the benefits of living a more relaxed, happy, lifestyle outweighs the risk.  I have always tried to live my life the way I want to live it, not some way that others think I should. I don't like living a 'normal' life.

Keep an eye on this blog to see how it is going.  See what my challenges are, see how I overcome them.  See how my girlfriend and I build a small business in rural Thailand, with all the trials and tribulations that it involves.
